Metabowlism

Thrown stoneware and slip-cast mugs

Bowl: H: 3.25” D: 12.5” | Cups: L(handle) 4.5” W: 3.25” H: 3”

As a very literal representation on the prompt “metabolism”, I created these forms to resemble the cell and the metabolism products produced. The large bowl, made from stoneware and carved with a wavy rim, has paintings of the phospholipid bilayer on the outside and images of all the major organelles on the inside. The 5 cups on the interior of the bowl are slipcast porcelain, emphasizing the purity of the products. Each mug is decorated with the major chemical of each prodcuct and related imagery on each face of the mug. Energy has the ATP molecule, Sugars have Glucose and so on. The mugs were designed to be interlocking to emphasize the nature of cellular metabolism and how the body would falter if even one of these metabolites was not synthesized properly.
