In mid 2021, our ceramic class was tasked with creating a piece that tells a narrative. I was caught between so many ideas at the time that I couldn’t choose something, but after discussing with my professor, I decided to put my many years of playing the cello and my fascination with the ocean into a ceramic piece. This was also at the time of the year that I really wanted to challenge myself, so I chose to create a hinged box. Using templates to create the cellos and choosing glazes to create a mottled and decayed looking surface, I emulated the effect the ocean takes on objects lost in shipwrecks.
